TRAUMA

Trauma is a unique emotional response to a distressing experience that exceeds our ability to cope.

If we become too scared too quickly, we stay too scared for too long, or we feel helpless in a situation, we may experience a trauma response. Our bodies may become stuck in the sensory experiences of the event(s), including distressing images, sounds, smells, and feelings.

Various life events and circumstances can cause a trauma response in our bodies.

You may have experienced the event directly or indirectly, once, repeatedly, or chronically. Such events include but are not limited to:

  • Childhood Abuse or Neglect

  • Car Accident

  • Crime

  • Death of a Loved One

  • Domestic Violence

  • First Responder Experiences

  • (Police; Fire; EMS; Nurse; Doctor)

  • Global Crisis

  • Loss of Health

  • Mass Shooting

  • Near-Death Experience

  • Natural Disorder

  • Pet Loss

  • Physical Injury or Paralysis

  • Sexual or Physical Abuse

  • Terrorist Attacks

  • Tour of Duty

  • Vicarious Trauma

  • Witnessing a Death or Near-Death

  • Work Accident

Beneath our trauma is a loss of control, loss of safety, and sometimes a loss of trust.

You may be experiencing some or all of the following common symptoms of loss:

  • Avoiding trauma-related stimuli

  • Changes in sleeping and/or eating

  • Changes in routine

  • Detached from self and/or others

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Difficulty remembering

  • Emotional exhaustion

  • Excessive worry or panic

  • Excessive anger or irritability

  • Frequent crying

  • Hyperarousal or hypervigilance

  • Hypoarousal

  • Nightmares and/or flashbacks

  • Overuse of alcohol, drugs, or other substances

  • Physical or emotional isolation

  • Reduced energy or motivation

  • Rigidity

  • Waves of emotion
