GROUP THERAPY

We understand that deep connections and understandings in a group setting can have a significant impact on how we process our past experiences and heal our hearts.

We have a variety of opportunities for group counselling and development. At The Grief and Trauma Healing Centre, we offer both therapeutic groups and educational groups. These groups are “closed groups” which means participants register for the sessions, and once the group begins, only those who registered are permitted to attend. This creates a feeling of emotional safety and trust among participants.

We believe in the power of group dynamics and shared experiences. Sometimes, the biggest struggle we face is believing that we are alone in our experience. Through a group experience, whether therapeutic or educational, you begin to see that others have experienced similar events or feelings, and through this, deeper healing and growth unfold. Groups can also help foster compassion, empathy and resources for ourselves and others, expanding the lessons beyond the therapeutic setting and propelling change into our everyday lives.

Our team of Edmonton psychologists and counsellors facilitate a variety of groups designed to work with participants seeking to grow and heal from a variety of experiences. Participants of a variety of ages, genders, cultures, religions, sexual orientations, and abilities are welcomed in the group setting.

We support individuals through a range of group topics that address a range of concerns and issues including

  • Anxiety

  • Assertiveness

  • Body Image

  • Boundaries

Often, participating in group services can be a great alternative for people who may not be able to access conventional therapy services, as more hours are facilitated at a significantly reduced rate. Additionally, the investment to participate in groups may be covered in part or in full by benefits or employee insurance plans, depending on the professional designation of the facilitator. It is encouraged that you contact your insurance provider to verify if group therapy will be covered, and any conditions of this coverage.

4-Week Helping Children Deal with Loss Program

Based on the book, “When Children Grieve” by John James and Russell Friedman, this program is designed to teach parents and caregivers of children the tools to help children effectively process and heal from loss of any kind. A vast majority of parents and caregivers find themselves at a loss when trying to help their children deal with any grieving experience that impacts them. This program provides the action steps on how to equip children with lifelong tools for healthy grieving. No matter the reason behind a child’s grief or the degree of severity, if a child you care about is grieving, the guidelines explored in this program can make a significant difference.

8-Week Grief Recovery® Support Group

The 8-Week Grief Recovery®  Support Group is an action-oriented program that is designed to support grieving people in moving beyond the pain caused by loss of any kind. The program is guided by “The Grief Recovery Handbook” by John James and Russell Freidman and includes weekly reading and homework assignments. This transformational support group is a safe and supportive space for you to examine what you’ve been taught about loss, to explore your beliefs about grief, how loss has impacted your life, and to complete a set of actions that will enable you to move forward in your life with hope and meaning. Whether you are grieving a recent loss or a loss from a long time ago, it is never too soon or too late to take the actions of this program.

Seeking Safety is a structured, Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) based group focused on supporting adults with histories of trauma and/or substance use. It is dedicated to increasing emotional, cognitive, interpersonal, and behavioral safety in a present-focused format, identifying strengths and developing coping skills. There are over 25 topics that may be discussed within the group depending on participant needs/interests including: self-care, grounding/calming tools, healthy relationships/boundaries, self-compassion, recovery from substance use, coping with triggers, and managing emotions.
