DIVORCE

A divorce signifies the death of a physical relationship with someone whom we loved and cared about deeply.

When our romantic relationship ends, so does the life we knew. Everything once familiar to us, ceases. We grieve the past. We grieve the present. We grieve the future.

Divorce can be a painful, lonely, difficult, and isolating experience.

Whether your marriage was short-lived or long-standing, healthy or abusive, ended on your terms or not, please understand that your feelings are normal and natural. Every relationship is unique; therefore, your grief is unique. Your grief cannot be measured by the length of time in your marriage, the emotional intensity of your relationship, whether or not you share children, how old you are, or any other contextual factor. Comparing your grief to others’ experiences or to past break-ups only minimizes your feelings and further isolates you in your pain. Nobody truly knows what it is like for you to grieve your divorce.

Grief is the normal reaction to loss.

You may be experiencing some or all of the following common symptoms of grief:

  • Changes in sleeping and/or eating

  • Changes in routine

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Excessive worry or panic

  • Emotional exhaustion

  • Frequent crying

  • Outbursts of anger

  • Overuse of alcohol, drugs, or other substances

  • Physical and/or emotional isolation

  • Preoccupation with the relationship

  • Reduced energy or motivation

  • Waves of emotion
